North Shields Emigrant dies in U.S.
A former North Shields man who emigrated to the United States 40 years ago has died in New York at the age of 91.
A sea going chief engineer Mr Alexander Brookbank was one of a crew which at the end of the 1914-18 war, returned an American passenger liner which had been loaned to Britain during the war. When he reached the United States he decided to stay there.
Later Mr Brookbak became a naturalized American and was joined there by his wife and four of their children. Two sons stayed in Britain. One is now living in Bristol and the other Mr A. G. Brookbank lives at Falstaff Road, North Shields. Mr Brookbank Snr, was born in North Shields where his father operated a fleet of tugs and small sailing coasters. He first went to sea for Bails and company, predecessors of Star Line. After emigrating he sailed in American ships. He retired 31 years ago.
